For those who were not
at the group ride Monday night, Rex Robichaux of Lynchburg, VA (via Cortez) joined
us for a ride in honor of his recently deceased father Val who had mentioned to
Rex how excited he was to start joining the new Monday/Saturday Montezuma group
rides. Below is a link to an article on the San Diego Reader website detailing
Val's tragic accident and the apparent cover up by local authorities in
Cozumel, Mexico. Truly a horrifying event for the Robichaux family, and
rather shocking that nothing has come out in the local paper about needless
death of this well respected member of our community (I did not know Val, but
he was the pathologist at Southwest Memorial for 20 years or so; perhaps many
of you knew him).
Perhaps it is worth forwarding this link to someone at the Cortez, Dolores, or Durango papers in an attempt to honor Rex's plea to let the tragedy raise driver's awareness of cyclists. Maybe we can all carry a little of his enthusiasm for the Iron Horse with us on our way up to Silverton at the end of May and keep his family in your thoughts when you throw your leg over the saddle.
Ride safe,
Vince
